Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are an exciting class of molecules that exhibit appreciable physical and chemical stabilities. The Pc macrocycle can host most metal ions in its cavity; hence numerous metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) have been synthesized, characterized, studied and assessed for their potential applicabilities in diverse areas of mankind. The nature of the metal ion encapsulatede within the Pc cavity plays a crucial role in the properties, reactions and of course, applications of the resulting MPc. MPcs exhibit a wide range of applications ranging from industrial, technological to medical, especially in oncology. . A review of the chemistry of MPcs (synthesis, properties and applications) is hereby presented.
